Shannara Wiki - Exploring the Magical World of Shannara

The phoenix stone is a Faerie talisman that was given to Bek Ohmsford by the King of the Silver River.

Characteristics[]

The phoenix stone was silver in color, and its depths had a liquid, swirling look. When a finger was placed on the stone, the swirling would stop and the stone would turn opaque.

According to the King of the Silver River, the stone would help the user find their way when they were at their most lost, both physically and mentally. To be used, it had to be thrown to the ground and shattered, meaning that it could only be used once. It was also an indiscriminate magic, meaning that it would work for whoever used it, even if it had been stolen.

History and Usage[]

The King of the Silver River gave the phoenix stone to Bek before his journey to Parkasia with the Druid Walker Boh and told the boy to throw the magical stone to the ground when he was the most lost and needed help finding his way. However, during the voyage Bek gave the stone to Ahren Elessedil because Ahren was struggling with his fear and had no magic of his own to rely on at the time. Walker warned Bek that he should not have given away the stone and that he should get it back from Ahren as soon as possible, but they were separated before Bek could do so.

Nevertheless, Ahren made good and crucial use of the phoenix stone to save himself and the seer Ryer Ord Star from the artificial intelligence Antrax. When Ahren used the stone, a cloud of mist surrounded himself and Ryer, rendering them invisible and intangible to their enemies and allowing them to escape Antrax's lair. However, instead of escaping they turned back, using the stone's cloaking powers to look for Walker Boh within the depths of the lair and save him from the intelligence. They successfully freed the Druid, who was then able to destroy Antrax.

Using the phoenix stone not to escape but to turn back and save Walker Boh allowed Ahren to directly confront and overcome his normally fearful nature, turning him into a stronger person and fulfilling the stone's potential to assist its wielder in finding their way mentally as well as physically.
