Wil and Eretria arrive at Arborlon only to discover that the Crimson have already slaughtered the population. Wil and Eritrea find a wounded warrior who says they were overwhelmed. Wil wants to find the Chosen but Eretria reminds him of his mission to visit Amberle. Wil complies and enters the Ellcrys, which opens a door. Will enters as it closes. Inside, he encounters Amberle on a beach.

Amberle says she heard Wil's cries but that she had nothing to say. She explains that she made the choice to serve the Four Lands. Wil tells Amberle that he lovers her. She responds that they share a moment in time that they will always cherish. Wil is still angry with Amberle for leaving. She understands but tells him that he must face his destiny. Wil believes that he cannot defeat the Warlock Lord and will lose all whom he holds dear. Wil believes that he is destined to lose but Amberle tells Wil that the Warlock's weakness is the Sword of Shannara. Wil shows the shattered hilt of the Sword.

At Graymark, the Warlock Lord asks Bandon why a mortal boy has raised him in the flesh of his mortal enemy. Bandon says that he wants to be his servant. The Warlock Lord senses that Bandon wants something from him. Bandon shows the Warlock Lord the body of his fallen lover Catania. Bandon begs him to resurrect her in return for becoming his servant.

At Storlock, Allanon trains Mareth how to wield a Druid Sword. She thinks it is pointless learning how to fight without magic. Allanon reminds her that magic is not a weapon and must be used sparingly. Allanon asks for a second round but Mareth storms out. Suddenly, Allanon is convulsed by pain and loses two more runes on his body. Allanon regrets not entering into a Druid sleep to replenish his magic after defeating the Dagda Mor. Allanon had to find Bandon and the druid sleep lasts for several years. Mareth realizes that Allanon will die if he doesn't have a Druid sleep.

Eretria stumbles upon Crimson soldiers rounding up the Chosen. A soldier kills a male Chosen and tries to offer a female Chosen a deal. However, Eretria kills the man with her axe. She leads the Crimson on a chase and then sneaks back to the clearing. Eritrea kills the guard and frees the prisoners. She tells them to flee to the tunnels beneath Arborlon and leads them there.

Back at Graymark, the Warlock Lord resurrects Catiana. Bandon talks to his former lover but she rejects him due to his dark magic. The Warlock Lord then uses his magic to Catiana into his lover and slave. When Bandon objects, the Warlock Lord strikes him unconscious.

Meanwhile, Wil tells Amberle that when his sword struck the Warlock Blade, he saw flashes of the future and his love ones in danger. Wil recalls seeing Eritrea turning to the darkness and Allanon and Mareth covered in blood. Wil also remembers seeing himself going underwater and believes he will fail. Wil hurls the sword into the sand. Amberle tells him that nothing about the truth is simple and that his sword broke because he was not yet ready to face it.

Wil asks about the truh and hears his father Shea Ohmsford speaking. Shea tells Wil that he is here to help him face the truth. Wil does not believe he is a hero but Shea tells him that he is better man that his father. Shea tells his son that he became a drunk and died a lonely death because he was unwilling to make the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the Warlock Lord. He couldn't because he did not want to leave his wife and son behind. Shea tells him that he was ashamed to be alive because he could not face the truth and tells Wil not to repeat that mistake.

At Leah, General Riga is visited by a spy who tells him that Allanon was brought to Storlock by his daughter, who has power. The spy informs Riga that the Gnomes were keeping a Codex. When Riga asks about his motives, the man shows Riga a stump of his hand, which he lost to a demon. Riga vows that magic will be stamped out and pays the man. He orders his men to ride for Storlock.

At Storlock, Mareth gives Allanon a drink in bed. He tells her that she will become a Druid but that she will lead a solitary life. Mareth is unafraid of being alone. However, Allanon tells her that she will have to watch everyone else she loves grow old and die. Allanon tells Mareth that her love for Wil can become an obstacle. He warns her that love and emotional attachments will cloud her judgment. When Mareth asks Allanon about her mother, Allanon replies that she was beautiful and intelligent but chose a life of learning over one of luxury. Allanon confides that he missed her mother. When Mareth asks Allanon whether he loved her mother, he replies that she was the only woman that he love but that it weakened him. He tells Mareth to let him rest.

Meanwhile, Eretria and the Chosen are pursued by mounted Crimson warriors. One of the Chosen is struck by an arrow in the head. The fugitives find themselves surrounded.

Back in the Ellcrys, Wil enters his father's stable. Wil says he wanted an ordinary life but Shea reminds his son that he is the world's only hope. He tells Wil that to kill the Warlock Lord, he must sink the blade beneath his heart. When Wil asks what if he fails, Shea responds that the magic of Shannara flows through his veins. He urges Wil to make peace with his past. Wil has reconciled with his dad but Shea tells him that there is one more person he must face.

In the forest, the Crimson prepare to finish off Eretria and the Chosen. However, a demon appears and kills the Crimson. Eretria tells them to flee into the tunnels while she faces the demon. Eretria tries to resist the demon but it enters her. One of the female Chosen sees her demonic possession.

In Leah, the Gnome chieftain asks Garet Jax why they are still alive. Jax thinks that General Riga killed Tamlin as a public show of force. Crimson soldiers enter. Jax asks the Gnome if he has any loved ones, the Gnome chieftain replies that he has his tribe but Jax reveals he has nobody but ghosts and regrets.

At Storlock, Mareth is surprised by a Crimson soldier. Crimson soldiers then confront Allanon. General Riga presents a bruised Mareth and demands that he surrender the Codex or his daughter dies.

At Graymark, Bandon awakens to find Catiana flirting with the Warlock Lord. Bandon is furious with the Warlock Lord but he tells him that she is nothing. The two strike blades but the Warlock Lord tells Bandon that nobody loved him. He adds that love is an illusion and that Bandon must free himself of love. As a test of loyalty, the Warlock Lord forces Bandon to plunge the Warlock Blade into Catiana's heart. Bandon is disillusioned but the Warlock Lord tells him that he is now worthy to walk by his side.

Back at Leah, Jax and the Gnome are led to the dam for execution. However, the guards are ambushed by several Gnome tribesmen led by the late Queen Tamlin's former captain of the guard. The captain tells them that there is a door beneath the dam. He also asks them to find and protect Mareth. Jax promises to do so before escaping.

Back at Storlock, Allanon surrenders the Codex. General Riga however reneges on his promise to spare Mareth and orders that the father and daughter be burnt at the stake. Allanon tells Riga he has no idea about what he is up against but Riga believes he is close to purging the Four Lands of all magic. A captain informs Riga that they have received no word from Graymark. Riga orders a detachment of his men to leave for Graymark and gives orders for Allanon and Mareth to be burnt at the sake. Allanon and Mareth look at each other.

In the Ellcrys, Wil finds that his sword is still broken in the sand. Wil then realizes that he must face Amberle, who is the "last truth." He accepts that she is gone and will never be coming back. Amberle agrees and Wil's sword "grows" back.

General Riga and his men enter Graymark only to encounter the Warlock Lord and Bandon. Riga orders his men to seize the intruders but the Warlock Lord uses magic to vaporize the Crimson soldiers. Riga believes the Warlock Lord has no power over him. However, the Warlock Lord binds him with wires and then crushes him between the gates. The Warlock Lord tells Riga the Four Lands will not be purged of magic but will be consumed by it before beheading the General. The Warlock Lord throws Riga's head to the ground. Bandon tells the Warlock Lord that the late Queen Tamlin bore a daughter named Lyria. The Warlock Lord says that they must find her because she is the key to unlocking Heaven's Well. Bandon looks with regret.

Meanwhile, a reinvigorated Wil leaves Amberle and the Ellcrys behind. He finds Eretria lying on the ground with blood on her hands. She asks what took "short tips" so long. When he asks what happened, Eretria tells him that she is fine but not the Crimson soldiers. She assures him the Chose are safe. The two embrace but Eretria's eyes momentarily turn black. She asks about Amberle but Wil says they have to go. They passed the bloodied corpse of the female Chosen who witnessed Eretria's possession.

At Storlock, the villagers and Crimson soldiers gather for the burning of Allanon and Mareth. Mareth blames herself but Allanon tells her that she is not to blame. Mareth replies that he gave the Codex to protect her. He tells her she is more important to him than magic. The captain taunts them by asking if magic will save them as he lights the hay and wood beneath the stake. Father and daughter hold hands in a loving embrace.
